SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

AND LIFE-SAVING DISPLAY. TO-DAY ’8 PROGRAMME. Large attendances of school children are expected at the displays of lifesaving which are to be given by the Maranui Surf Club’s champion team in the West School baths at 2.30, and the Dixon Street baths at 3.30 this afternoon. The members of the team will also compete to-night at the Masterton Club’s second carnival which has attracted competitors from Wellington, Grey town, Carterton and Pahiatua. The visiting competitors comprise the strongest combination to visit this town since pre-war days. The first event starts promptly at 7.30 and patrons are advised to be early and avoid disappointment. The handicaps appear on page 2. SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. MEETING NEXT WEEK. At a meeting of teachers of the local primary schools, it was decided to hold a combined schools championship swimming carnival on Tuesday next week. It was decided to apply to the Borough Council for the use of the Dixon Street baths.

The following programme was drawn up: Neat dive, boys and girls; senior boys’ and girls’ 50 yards; junior boys’ and girls’ 25 yards; senior and junior boys’ and girls’ relay, teams of four to swim 25 yards each; senior and junior boys and girls’ breaststroke, 2.) yards; boys’ and girls’ 25 yards backstroke.

The following officials were appointed: Starter, Mr. W. C. L. Baskiville; swimming judges, girls’ events, Misses Payne, Williamson, McFadden; boys’ events, Messrs J. Noble, J. P. Cooper, G. J. Goldsman; diving judge, Mr. S. V. McEwen.

It was decided to limit each event to four entries from each school. The school scoring the highest aggregate points will hold the Donald Cup for one year.
