LIFE SENTENCE.
FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF CONSTABLE.
STERN COMMENT FROM BENCH.
(Received Sunday, 11 p.m.
LONDON, February 20. Ther3 was a sensational scene at the Nottingham Assizes, when Edgar Smith was found guilty of the attempted murder of Police Constable Dainty, who overtook Smith motoring and was shot by him. The Judge said: “You shot this unfortunate. man three times when he was doing his duty. There is only one penalty I can inflict, namely, penal servitude for life.” Smith reeled in. the clock, while there wsc a gasp m the Court. Presently Sorth recovered and said, “Cannot you have mercy, if not for me, for my wife? This is a terrible sentence.” ‘Mt is a terrible sentence,” remarked the Judge, “but you have done a terrible thing and it only by the mercy of GoQ that you are not charged with murder.” The Judge recalled Constable Dainty, and said: “No 1 one could have blamed you if, seeing that he was armed, and having one bullet in your body, you ceased to try to arrest him, but nevertheless you took two more shots into your body before you ceased to do your duty. This is a record of which any man might be proud.”—(A. and N.Z.)
