WOOL MARKET FIRM
PRICES AT WELLINGTON SALE A GOOD CLEARANCE. KEEN BUYING BY BRADFORD AND CONTINENT. The fourth Wellington wool sale ed on Thursday evening, concluded on Thursday evening, concluded yesterday. Bidding, with Bradford ■ and Continents.- buyers chiefly active, was strong at the outset and was maintained well as the sale proceeded. The selling firms agree in declaring that prices were appreciably better than at earlier sales of the present season. LEVIN & CO., LTD.
Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., report: The fourth sale of the 1926/27 season began on Thursday night, the offering I being 27,000 bales, our catalogue representing 6341 bales. Buyers attended from all consuming centres in full force. The wool consisted largely of crossbreds and a quantity of halfbreds and merinos from Marloorongh. The general condition was not equal to earlier sales, being heavier in grease and some seed showing in many clips. Jhere were not many super lots of Merino, halfbred or crossbred, and little of the latter suitable for American requirements, therefore the high prices for super lots may not appear as frequently as in the January catalogue, although, quality for quality, equal prices were paid. Bidding throughout was extremely keen and buying was well distributed, and we sold 98 per eent of our catalogue under the hammer. Merino went to Bradford and local mills; the Fest quality was taken by Dominion mills, but there was not niuch’ available for them. Prices *>ll round were on a par with January. Halfbreds which met with such a good
sale in January, did equally well. The market can be quoted very firm at January level. Crossbreds suitable for America remained very firm with no quotable advance. Average wools, 44’s/48’s quality, showed an advance of id to Jd owing to strong demand from Bradford and the Continent. This range contributed the bulk of the offering. which is a satisfactory feature.
jjkaiities under 44’s did not show any ivppreciation, but met with general good competition at last sale rates. We mentioned in our January report that there was a strong demand from the <lOOllO6Ol for short staple wool, even •of shabby and inferior style. This demand continues, and some apparently inferior wools from the Nelson district sold out of proportion to the price of well-grown, long-staple, bright clips. Hogget wool sold excellently at January rates and occasionally better. Lambs’ wool occupied the pride of position in the sale. There was a large quantity offering and many parcels of good quality. The demand from France, Bradford, Japan and Dominion mills brought forth strong competition and prices advanced from Jd to Id. Pieces and bellies almost shared the position with lambs’ wool and brought most satisfactory rates at an advance of Jd to id all round. The demand was largely Continental. Our bin wools, under the now well-known “KAIM’ARRA” brand, sold remarkably well, getting the keenest competition of a sate, and growers who have continued to bin must be pleases! when
they see their actual results. FARMEES’ DISTRIBUTING CO. The New Zealand Farmers Co-opec-alive D.islribi:;■ Co., i.'il.. -.'port: — We held our :■ .-.'rih wool sale of the season in W- ngton cm Friday, our catalogue being taken on Friday morning, when w.e submitted a catalogue ot' 2600 bales which‘brought the keenest of competition from a full bench .of buyers. Bidding was spirited for alt lots with the result that about 96 per eent. of the total offering was disposed , of under the hammer. The reports from Southern quarters may have given growers to believe that a sharp advance had taken place but we have to record at this centre that the prices as compared with January, are certainly in sellers’ favour. Super wools were fully as firm as last month, but wo do not think any advance can be recorded fcj- these lots. Good average wools, however, were a good id, some a 30, and on rare occasions a shade better than in January, and the same may be said of pieces and bellies. Continental competition for these lots being the main factor. Lambs’ wool was particularly strong, being occasionally purchased for France at prices round about Id and occasionally Id better than in January, each lot, seeing the keenest competition. Buyers from America were not .much in evidence although it must be remembered that the offering was not particularly suitable. The bulk of the pieces were taken by representatives from Bradford whose eager competition with Continental operators was no doubt responsible for the firm tone that prevailed throughout, and prices from a grower’s point of view are probably still hardly at a high enough level. It is, at the‘same time, satisfactory to recall values so fully firm. The undermentioned realisations taken from our offering will indicate to some extent the values:—

Wright, Stephenson and D.., ( report as follows:—-Fur the fourth sale of the current series we offered 4065 bales and sold 4002. All the buyers were present and a splendid clearance was effected under the keenest competition until the very end of the sale. Bradford and the Continent absorbed most of the offering, America again only being interested in super lots. Prices as a whole were firmer than in January, probably to the extent of a half-penny per pound for fleece wool, but the feature of the sale was the extraordinarily keen demand for good pieces and lambs’ wool, these sorts showing an appreciation of at least a penny 10,3 penny half-penny. Binned and re-classed wools jvere in great favour and sold exceedingly well. The following are our principal Wairarapa sales, including our binned wools which are sold under “CHALLENGE” brand: —
