MASTERTON RAM FAIR
HEAVY ENTRIES PREJUDICE AUCTION.
NUMEROUS LOTS PASSED IN. RATHER POOR DEMAND. . Desultory competition and a slackening demand were the features of the opening day of the annual ram fair held at Solway yesterday under the auspices of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The sale did not compare with the record-breaking auction held in Masterton last month. It was hardly to be expected that such prices would again be obtained, but yesterday’s market for Romneys, both stud and flock animals, was the weakest for manyyears. ■ The sale opened quite spiritedly, and for the first hour the major portion of the stock offered changed hands. From that point, however, values quickly settled down to a much lower level than is usual at this .sale, and vendors in almost every case had to readjust their reserves. The result was that throughout the afternoon the stock was changing hands at very low figures, but fit was only the beet class of animals that was being sold. The catalogue was heavy. Towards the close of the afternoon, lot after lot was passed through the -ring without a bid being offered until it was finally decided to close down the sale with a large remaining consignment unoffered.
Afore satisfactory conditions of sale perhaps might be ensured by placing a limit on the number of entries, a policy which is practised in other centres to the satisfaction of all parties, yesterday’s offering contained a heavy proportion of inferior quality stock which had the effect of lowering the range of values. With the limitation in operation, only the better class of stock would be entered.
The auction yesterday was restricted to the offering of flock and stud Romneys. The sale for the latter class was rather flat, considerably below expectations, and only one-third (twenty out of sixty offered) was disposed of. The top price was 35 guineas, realised for a shearling ram offered on account of Messrs Blatchford Brothers, who averaged 271 guineas for the two rams which they sold. Twenty-seven guineas was the best price reached by the Penrose offering, three of -which were sold at an average of 23 1-3 guineas. Mr. J. H. Grigg, of Longbeach, Canterbury, sold two rams at an average of 27 guineas, while Mr. Quentin Donald passed over a line of seven at an average of 22 1-3 guineas.
Buyers were most discriminate in the manner in which they picked the eyes of the flock offering, one half of which was passed in. Mrs. S. E. M. Holmes, of Matahiwi, topped the averages with 7 2-3 guineas for a line of fifteen. Next in order were Blatchford Brothers, 15 with an average of 7 guineas; W. Perry and Son, 25 averaging 6$ guineas; H. H. Gorringe, 35 averaging 6 guineas; Q. Donald, 9 averaging 6 guineas; P. M. Compton, 43 averaging 6 guineas; F. E. Dorset, 25 averaging 5| guineas; R. Buick, 31 averaging 5| guineas and the Wagland Estate, 32 averaging 4£ guineas.
The sale was conducted by the Masterton Associated Auctioneers. Following is the detailed list of pur chases:—
