BEEF PRICES DROP. CHRISTCHURCH, February 16. At Addington market heavy entries were again the rule to-day, a large number of ewes coming from the North Island and. Marlborough, and other classes of sheep from various parts of the South Island. Store sheep: A very heavy entry, mostly aged and medium classes of ewes. Good ewes sold well and. lambs sold with little change, but secondary ewes were easier. The dry weather still continues and is restricting farmers’ purchases. Ono good lino of 1450 two-tooth North Island Romneys made 32/3. Forward, rape lambs 19/ to 20/6, medium lambs 17/ to 18/6, lambs 13/6 to 15/, cull and inferior lambs 11/ to 13/, good halfbred wether lambs 18/6 to 25/, medium halfbred lambs 16/ to 17/9, two-tooth Romney ewes to 32/3, two-tooth halfbred ewes to 28/6, fourtooth crossbred ewes 25/6 to 27/, four six and eight-tooth thre,e-quarterbred ewes 27/6 to 30/6, four and six tooth crossbred ewes 22/, sound and failing mouthed crossbred ewes 17/6 to 19/6, small, two-tooth cross-bred ewes 217 to 22/6, crossbred, ewes 5/ to 9/, better conditioned'’sorts 9/6 to 11/, four and six-tooth halfbred wethers 20/ to 21/, two and four-tooth crossbred wethers 17/9 to 18/9. Fat lambs: 4800 yarded. A sound sale at reduced export rates of a farthing per lb. Extra prime lambs to 27/7, prime lambs 24/9 to 27/, medium lambs 22/6 to 24/6, unfinished, lambs 20/6 to 22/3.

Fat sheep: A moderate yarding and good sale, ewes selling briskly at the lower export prices, particularly towards the finish. Extra prime wethers to 32/4, prime wethers 25/9 to 27/6, medium wethers 23/9 to 25/6, light wethers 21/6 to 23/6, extra prime ewes to 26/10, prime ewes 17/9 to 22/, medium ewes 14/9 to 17/6, light ewes 12/6 to 14/6, aged ewes 10/ to 12/. . Fat cattle: Another big entry of 630 head. Most classes of beef were down 20/ to 25/ per head. Light prime beef made to 35/ per 100 lbs in a few cases, prime 31/6 to 34/, heavy and medium 26/6 to 30/, rough down to 22/6. Heavy steers to £l5 7/6, prime medium weight steers £l2 10/ to £l4, medium steers £lO 10/ to £l2 5/, light steers £7 10/ to £lO 5/, extra prime hoifers to £l2 7/6, prime heifers £8 to £lO, medium heifers £6 to £7 15/, light heifers £4 5/ to £5 15/, extra prime cows to £ll 17/6, prime cows £7 to £9, medium cows, £5 5/ to £6 15/, light cows £4 to £5. Vealers: Good calves sold well, but immature stuff was not wanted. Runners ihadc £6 to £7.

Store cattle: There was a fair-sized entry. Forward stuff sold fairly well. However, prices generally were lower than last week. Good two-year-old steers £5 17/6, good cows to £4 10/, heifers £1 10/ to £2 10, medium cows £2 10/ to £3 10/.

Bairy cattle: The entry of dairy cattle totalled 78 head, including a few exceptionally good springers. An extra good one brought £l9. The sale throughout was keen. Best second, third, and fourth calvers £9 10/ to £l2 15/, medium sorts £7 to £9, inferior £5 10/ to £6 15/, best springing heifers £8 to £l3, medium sorts £4 10/ to £7 10/, aged eows in profit, 30/ to £2 10/. Fat pigs: A heavy entry with about 250 (including stores) from the West Coast. The bacon demand was easier, heavy pigs being unsaleable. Chopper. 59/ to £5 6/, light baconers £3 10/ to £4, heavy baconers £4 2/6 to £4 7/6, extra, heavy baconers to £4 12/ (average price per lb 5d to 6Jd), light porkers 47/6 to 53/, heavy porkers 57/6 to 64/ (average price per lb. 7Jd to BJd). Store pigs: A good entry Of all grades of stores and a very brisk demand, values being up by 2/ per head all round. Values were: Small weaners 15/ to 18/6, medium weaners 20/ to 23/, better sorts 23/6 to 26/, small stores 27/6 to 35/, medium stores 36/ tc 42/, large stores to 50/.—(P.A.).
