•he demise of the “New Zealand Times” was mentioned by the president of the New Zealand section of the Empire Press Union, at the annual meeting of that body in Wellington yesterday. Sir George Fenwick said that the “New Zealand Times” Company had fallen out of membership consequent on the “Times” ceasing publication through the sale of the company’s business to th’e Wellington Publishing Company. “It has not been without sincere regret that many of us have seen the demise of a newspaper whose existence has covered so long a period, including change of name from the *‘Wellington Independent ’ ’ to the ‘ New Zealand Times,” as 61 years in New Zealand’s history. Its somewhat chequered career fur a good many years past made it obvious that recovery to a sound financial position was unlikely, and the close of its career was therefore not a matter of surprise to those who realised that Wellington could not support two morning newspapers. ”
The Union Company’s steamer Kaituna has been delayed at Auckland for two days owing to the crew refusing to take the vessel to sea. They allege that she is unseaworthy and request that an inquiry into the matter should be held. The’ officials of the company have been in communication with the Marine Department, and it is understood that a reply received states that the Kaituna is seaworthy and has been granted a certificate to that effect. *The company is hopeful that the vessel will take her departure to-day. The Kaituna was recommissioned on Monday in order to load cement at Portland for southern ports, and on the same afternoon was moved to the Princess Wharf to take in stores and embark a new crew. The complaint about her being unseaworthy was made after the crew had signed on the ship’s articles. Owing to the delay to the Kaituna, the Kauri is to take the loading berth at Portland. As a consequence, if the Kaituna sails to-day, it will be for another port. -(P.A.).
