SHOW PREPARATIONS.

FINAL MEETING OF A. & P. COMMITTEE. BIG SUCCESS ANTICIPATED. i WORK THAT HAS TOLD. The general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association yesterday held its final meeting prior to the Annual Show. Mr. G. EL Perry presided over a full attendance of members. Reports and other information laid before the meeting made it clear that preparations for the big event of the year are well forward, and that there is every likelihood .of the Show proving highly successful. NEW MEMBERS. There were cries of : << Well done,’ when the secretary (Mr. R. H. Williams) reported that ‘forty-seven new members had been enrolled during the month. AN APPEAL TO TOWNSFOLK. The chairman (Mr. Perry) said that the number of entries received for the Show classes was excellent. Members of the committee had worked hard during the year, and the increased entry figures showed that their efforts were appreciated and had brought results. They now wanted the townspeople to back them up and ensure a record attendance. He thought it was not asking too much to request all sports bodies in Masterton to forego their sports on that day and attend the Show. The outside public hardly knew how much work was entailed in organising the Show, and should be very willing to put off their picnics and other affairs in order to ensure a record muster at Solway. SPECIAL INVITATIONS. A number of replies were received to special invitations to attend the Show. The Governor-General notified that on account of the proximity of the Royal visit and numerous other engagements, it would be impossible for him to be present. The Hon. A. D. McLeod also expressed regret at his inability to accept the invitation of the committee. Owing to the fact that the Prime Minister was returning to the Dominion on February 14, Mr. McLeod explained, it was impossible for him to make any commitments for some little time after that date. The Minister offered his best wishes for a successful gathering. The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. O J. Hawken) wrote that he hoped to attend the Show, at all events on People’s Day, and expressed the hope that it would be a great success. Acceptances of invitations to attend w r ere received also from His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (Mr. L. B. Beale), Dr. Reakes (Director-General of Agriculture), Mr. C. J. B. Norwood (Mayor of Wellington), Professor G. F. Peren, of Victoria College, and from the secretary of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of several members of that body who intend to be preFint. The Mayor of Masterton and other local representatives arc also to l»e invited. It was agreed that there should be an official luncheon in the Stewards’ Room on opening day, with a brief toast list.

THE NAVAL INVITATION. A letter was received from the Hon. A. D. McLeod covering copies of correspondence between himself and tho Minister of Defence (Mr. Rolleston) regarding a proposed display at the Hiow by a party of Philomel boys. Mr McLeod reported with regret that the display could not be arranged. The Minister of Defence had approved and adopted the view taken by the Commodore in command of the'New Zealand Naval Division that a visit to Masterton by a naval party would involve too big a break in training. Moreover, it would be difficult to decline invitations from other localities if the Masterton invitation were accepted. Mr. Perry, who had made a special effort to arrange the visit, said it was a pity that the bluejackets were not coming. STOCK DRIVE. It was reported that nothing had been done in the matter of the proposed combined stock drive in association with the Farmers’ Union. Mr. R. J. Barton said that it was the fault of the general committee, and not of the secretary, that this matter had been allowed to slide. In this other members concurred heartily, stating that the secretary had an immense amount of detail to handle and was working early and late. Mr. Perry said that he had approached some people, including cx-offlcials of the association, regarding the stock drive, and had met with a very cold reception. They had looked to the frtock drive as a means of obtaining fpnds to pay for the furnishings of the new rooms, but people had the idea that they were rather overdoing it.
