RADIO NOTES.

r “Detector.”).

(By

Station 3YA, Christchurch, will again be “on the air” next Friday at 8 p.m., when the official opening will take place and a special programme has been arranged for the occasion. On Monday evening last, a most interesting lecture, dealing with the Chinese upheaval, was delivered by Mr. J. M. Prentice from ' 3YA’s station. Since Mr. Prentice joined the company a decided improvement has been made in the quality of the New Zealand Stations’ programmes. It is his intention to endeavour to bring the standard of programmes up to that of the larger

stations and at the same time to try and cater for the majority of licensees.

Static and fading have played a most important part in the bad receptions of New Zealand stations during the pant week. On Thursday evening, “atmospherics” were somewhat trying, and on Saturday evening the reception whs infinitely worse. Station IYA, Auckland’s transmission came through in a very ptrtchy way. Detector” has bee;- advised that two super-power broadcasting stations are now in tho course of erection at Calcutta and Bombay, India, with a power of 16 kilowatts being equal to that of Daventry, England. Programmes from these two stations may possibly bo heard in New Zealand in the course of two or three months by those licensees who have a good 5-valvo or long distance receiving set. The time at which these stations are likely to be heard is 2 a.m., New Zealand time, when it is about 8 p.m. in India. The wave lengths have not yet been announced, but there should be no trouble for the enthusiast who cares to log-in these stations as most of the Australian stations will be "off the air” by this time.
