OPORTO REVOLT.

REPORTED OFFER TO SURRENDER BOMBARDMENT PROPOSED. LISBON, February 6. Many rebels were killed and hundreds wounded in Oporto in a battle Which has continued since Friday. The rebels, entrenched in a square in the heart of the town, are equipped with machine-guns. Buildings have been badly damaged and civilians wounded. Thus far the Government troops have endeavoured to spare buildings, but the latest report states that the Minister of War rejected a rebel offer to surrender conditionally, and has called upon the population to evacuate the city, as a general bombardment is impending. The residents are pessimistic not believing that the Government has gained the upper hand.—(A. and N.Z.)

Shells are falling upon the revolutionaries entrenched in the Place Batalla. —(A. and N.Z.) A FIERCE CONFLICT. PROTECTION OF BRITISH NATIONALS, (Received Monday, 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, February 6. The '‘Daily Mail’s” Lisbon correspondent says that British merchants are requesting the Ambassador to secure the presence of a British warship to protect their interests in Oporto. Thus far only slight damage has been done.

The 44 Daily News’s” Lisbon correspondent says that five thousand loyalist troops, occupying strategic points around Oporto, opened fire on the rebels with artillery and machine guns. They concentrated fire on the Place de Barthala, the city’s great open square, which the rebels strongly fortified. Many houses are reported to be destroyed. The rebel positions were also attacked with hand grenades. The crack of rifles and machine guns is to be heard throughout the night. The Minister of Commerce, -captured by the rebels, escaped and joined the loyalists. The strike on the State railways has increased the difficulties. The insurgents have appointed a. government, headed by th& military surgeon, . Dr. Moraes.—(Sydney “Sun.”)
