LOST IN THE SURF.

ATTEMPT AT RESCUE.

TAURANGA, February 7.

While surf bathing at Mount Maunganui yesterday morning a young man named Paul Mischefski, aged 21, was drowned. There were several people in tho surf at the time. The deceased and a man named Armstrong got into difficulties, and some friends got Armstrong out and called to two others, Lowis Peglar and Dudley Lloyd, to help Mischefski. who was unable to swim. They were swimming to the shore with the deceased floating when a big breaker caused him to grasp Lloyd, and both went under. Peglar dived and brought them both up. Lloyd then struck out for the shore to get a lifeline, while Peglar supported Mischefski. Before reaching the shore Lloyd noticed Peglar alone, and went back and found both had gone down. Peglar was then losing his hold. Lloyd and Peglar managed to get aslisru fairly exhausted. In the meantime , two to reach the deceased with a life line, but ho disappeared before they reached him. The police wore informed, and search was made for the body, which has not been recovered.

A younger brother of the deceased was drowned on the inner beach at the Mount tw-o years ago. The parents reside at Inglewood.—(P.A.)
