GAMING LAW.
A CHARGE DISMISSED. SEQUEL TO POLICE RAID. CHRISTCHURCH, February 5. Last Friday in the Magistrate’s Court, Alexander Dunean was fined £75 for keeping a common gaming house at 171 Madras Street. To-day, before Mr. Lowry, S.M., Walter Hulston pleaded not .guilty to a charge, that being the owner of the premises, he allowed them to be used as a gaining house. Defendant is a hairdresser in business at 173 Madras Street.
It was stated in evidence that prior to June last, 171 Madras Street was raided, Hulston being then the owner and two men found in charge were each fined £lOO. Since then the premises have still been kept as a gaming house. V7hen the police raided the premises or. January 22, Hulston was standing in a room and Dunean was busy with betting business, with betting papers and material in evidence, which Hulston could sec. Tho defence was that Hulston was not aware that betting was being carried on.
The Magistrate dismissed the charge.—(P.A.).
