HIGH SCHOOL BATHS
A RECLAMATION PROJECT.
SPRINGS AND A SWAMP.
F SCHEME OUTLINED BI BOARD CHAIRMAN.
® On a portion cf the High School Grounds near Cornwall Street there is an area of swamp land, perhaps an acre in extent. The water forming the swamp flows from a series of springs—really the outcrop of a water-hearing shingle hed that P extends from near the Masterton Bailwyy Station to the Solway Showground. On being interviewed yesterday, the chairman of the Wairarapa Secondary Schools Board (Mr. C. E. Daniell) outlined a scheme under which it is proposed to utilise the area above described as the site for a swimming bath fo.r the High School. “At the School grounds,” Mr. Daniell stated, “levels have been taken to ascertain if it is possible to form below the springs a swimming bath six feet deep and still drain the water awav by gravitation. It is found that a total'fall of eight feet is available. My suggestion is that a concrete bath fiftv vards long and twenty yards wide should be built on the solid terrace land. The soil removed would till the depression, while the cutting off of the water would reclaim the swamp area, Making it available for use. “As to the cost,” Mr. Daniell added. “a committee is now engaged in gathering data, and will report to the next meeting of the board.” “Where is the money to come from?” the board chairman was asked. “Well,” he replied, “we consider it part of the necessary equipment of a good school, and if on the information we submit Masterton citizens are convinced that it is a desirable and practical scheme, ,1 judge that the money will be found. In the meantime, we are collecting data and developing the plans.”
