CARTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

fortnightly meeting. (From Our Resident Reporter.) .The Mayor (Mr W. Howard Booth) presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last night. There were also present Crs. Trapp, Harp, Hughes, Slater, Smart, Freddy, McKenzie, and Eagle. The treasurer submitted a statement showing & deficit of £760. Accounts amounting to £1285 17s sd, were passed for payment. A letter from the New Zealand Teachers' Instittue regarding the effect of moving pictures upon children wag ''received" by the Council, as was also one from the Dunedin City Council in reference to a bonus to parents with large families. The Mayor intimated that a £IOOO loan had been granted for the contributon towards the erection of the Waingawa and Tauherenikau bridges, and towards the cost of the Council's allocation of the maintenance of the Rimutaka road. Mrs Humphries renewed her application to have the water supply connected with her Clareville property. The requested was granted by the Council. ' Information ( was received that a ioan of £16,000 for. the erection of a Town Hall could not be entertained. The Mayor's notice of motion re the extension of Dixon street to Park road, was defeated. The Works Committee reported as follows:—It was decided to put on a coat of metal syds to the chain on Brooklyn road, from Lincoln road to the Borough boundary, about 20 chains, at an estimated cost of £22. It was resolved to ask the Domain Committee to report on the advisability of removing the gate to the entrance of Carrington Park. It waß resolved that a letter be sent the Associated Auctioneers asking that a septic tank be installed at the saleyards at once, failing which an information will be laid against them. A building permit was granted J. Hall for the erection of a house in Garrison street. It was decided that Mr McFarlane be asked to remove the timber lying on a section in Broadway as being a menace for fire within the brick area* The Salvation Army wrote asking for the use of the rotunda for a Band that waS wivisting the town during Easter.—Granted.
