At last night's meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. W. Howard Booth) was nominated as the Council's representative on the proposed Wairarapa Electric Power Board. Mr. William Baird, contractor, a very early and highly respected pioneer of South Canterbury, died at Timaru on Friday. • The late Mr. Baird was born at Belfast, and arrived in theDgminion in 1874 by the barque Pleiades. Hardy died at Gieborne on Monday, aged 80 years. He was a grandson of Sir Thos. Hardy, of Trafalgar, one of Nelson's captains. Deceased had been a resident in the Poverty Bay district for fifty-four years, and saw eervioe in the Maori war. Captain Hardy was the father of Mrs T. Hardy-Gigbson, of Greenmeadows, and of Miss M. Hardy, of Wellington.
