MASTERTON-OPAKI RIFLE CLUB

FIELD DAY.

(Notes by "Magpie.") The above Club concluded its season on Saturday, when the championship for the year 1920 was decided. F• Bolton, who recently returned from the front, wins the championship after a close tussle with the veteran R. J. King, the latter at 1000 yards range requiring a "bull's eye" for his last 3hot to carry off the coveted honour, but, owi&g to a tricky change in the wind, a miss was registered instead of a "bull," and Bolton secured the honour. Bolton's win is a very popular one with his Club mates, and after nearly winning the championship in previous years he at last has been successful in carrying off the blue riband, which is a high distinction considering that some of the best shots in the Dominion are membefs of the Masterton-Opaki Rifle Club. During- the first part of the day conditions were jdeal for shooting, and some good scores were registered. R. J. King registered a possible at 300 yards, and F. Bolton also secured a possible at 900 yards, but later on in the day rain commenced to fall, which made shooting difficult. M. Macintosh, an erstwhile member of the Club, and resident of Masterton, but now of Christchurch, spent a day shooting with his fornfer Club mates/ and advantage was taken of the opportunity of presenting him with a token of his Club mates esteem ia the form of a purse of sovereigns.. Deputy President R. J. King, in making the presentation, referred to Mr Macintosh's many sterling qualities, both as a citizen of Masterton and a member v of the Opaki Rifle Club, and stated that he would be missed very much indeed by the Club, he be ng "invaluable as an organiser and a firstclass shot. Mr King made mention of the fact that hp has been missed very much in, the teams of late, and em-

phasised the fact that it was more than a figure of speech to say thai Masterton's loss was a distinct gain to Christchurch, and concluded by wishing Mr the best of luck. Mr Macintosh, who was taken by surprise, feelingly replied, and regretted having to sever Jb.s connection with the Opaki Rifle Club. The following are details of the shooting:—
