A NEW PROPOSAL.

A special meeting of the Cabinet on Sunady evening considered the coal crisis. The Daily Express states that it was , decided to increase the offer to the miners to two shillings per day, based on a twenty per cent, advance. The decision of the miners to accept a percentage basis instead of the flat rate gives promise of an agreement. The Goveriuneht is less concerned about the miners' precise demand than about the return to the full system of payjment by results.

WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Prime Minister has been successful in arranging a conference between the gold owners and the miners, to discuss points at issue in the dißputO at Waihi. Mr. Massey's -offer of the services of a Concoliation Commissioner io act as chairman of the confer once, has been accepted by both sides. >4 Owing to the illness of the Commit, sioncr at Auckland, Mr. P. Hajley, now of .the Board of 'irade but formerly the Conciliation Commissioner at Wellington, is to act, and will leave for the north, to-morrow. •The conference will sit at Waihi as soon as possible.
