LAWN TENNIS.
Win for New Zealanders.
' ENGLISH CHAMPIONS DEFEATED
fojtiiskSM ll • , [By Telegraph—Pi ess Association.) WELLINGTONj Last Night.
"With the exception of the occasion when the Davis Cup finals were played in New Zealand, there has perhaps never been a better tennis doubles match played in this country than that between the English Davis Cup men and the New Zealand representatives played at the Thorndon courts to-day. • The English , representatives were Beamish and Lowe and the New Zealanders Geoffrey Ollivier and J. C. Peacock. •
The, New . Zealaoders won a welldeserved victory by three sets to two, &—3, 7—5, 7—9, 3—6, 6—l. The court had dried remarkably well after the rain, but was still blow. Beamish was expected to play the strongest game, but did not do so. His staleness was probably, attributable to the fact that he is suffering from a slight cold. , . Lowe playcrtl a very sound game, but was also slow, because of his lameness. This did not eeopi to trouble him so much as on Saturday. His service was remarkably good; arid the strongest of the four., , New Zealanders suffer froni lack of combination, almost as much as from lack of, practice against good players. With a very short time of such practice, they would improve vastly, and would be quite good enough for Beamish and Lowe at their best. '
'ln yesterday's match they, played an attacking game • riglit through. There was . more versatility about their play, and generally they showed quit© as much resource as did the Englishmen. As appears from the scores New Zealand won 29 games and England 24. New Zealand won 184 strokes, and England 164. '
