WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING, (From Our Resident Reporter.) Tiho monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South Council was held at Carterton on Saturday, there being present Crs. W. Perry (chairman), T. V. Moore, r J. Hodder, D. McGregor, J. M. McGregor, R. Cooper, and C. A. Cameron. The treasurer reported a debit balance in the bank of £1964 lis 4d. The receipts since last meeting amounted to £156 8s sd. - Accounts amounting to £1737 5s lid were passed fat payment. A. C. Gawith, Longbußh, wrote thanking the Council for its offer to lease a piece of land to him for 21 years at £1 per acre, and accepting the offer. T. J. Rathbonp, sawmiller, wrote, offering £3 2s 6d for bluegums on Hughes' road.—The Council considered the amount not tempting _ enough as the timber was increasing in value every year. It was pointed out that the trees were \ doing no; harm. The offer was rejected. ■ ( The Town Clerk of Carterton wrote, asking the Council to co-operate with the Borough Council at the reception to be tendered His Royal Highness Prince of Wales.—- I\> was decided to. accept the invitation for Councillors to be represented on the platform. F. G. Moore, clerk to the Masterton County, Council, wrote stating that as the Public Works Department had' been unable to undertake the necessary plans for the Kaituna bridge he had, in accordance with resolution, written Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt requesting them to give the Council an estimate of the cost of the proposed structure. , The Minister of Public Works wrote expressing the opinion that the Kaituna bridge should be erected with sufficient strength to carry a traction engine or a mob of cattle. , Messrs Rigg Bros, wrote asking for permission to trench across the road for the purpose of carrying the water supply from the present - homestead at "Penrose" to where the new homestead is being erected.—Permission: granted on the usual terms. Arch. E. Anderson, Clareville, wrote asking the Counoil if it would clean the two creeks where they cross at the. corner of Francis road and Perry's,road.—On the motion of the Chairman, it was decided that the work be attended to. The Council instructed the Clerk to lose as little delay as possible in preparing ft roll for the election of a representative to tho proposed HydroElectric Board, and to employ assistance if necessary. Cr. T. V. Moore reported that the Special Committee had visited the hj% take of the Carrington water race and had secured an easement from Mr Anderson on the. payment of £BO compensation, the erection of a fence on both sides of the race and the provision "of a Douglas pump.—The arrangements made by the Committee were endorsed by the Council. On the motion of Mr C. A. Cameron, it was decided to call for tenders for the expenditure «f Govern-!

ment grants, authority for which had been received. j Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt! forwarded revised plans of a. culvert on the Ahiaruhe road, as agreed to ; by the Overseer and a special committee of the Council. Mr Hogg, solicitor, waited on the Council and asked that dedication of the Ahiaruhe road he accepted on a written undertaking being given that ; the thoroughfare is completed in compliance with the plans and specifications.—This was agreed to. H. P. Brasel wrote stating that the Taratahi water race was dry at his property, and pointing out that it was a serious thing to him. CARRINGTON WATER RACE. G. Laing Meason. reported as follows on the Carrington Water Raee contract: —Slower progress has been made this month on the contract than heretofore —which is attributed to the difficulty in obtaining labour and teams. Since the last report the contractor has excavated the balance of the small distributing races, and ho has completed about five chains of headwork below Mr Anderson's house. Tkis work is turning out satisfactorily, although by reason of the,water in the low-lying ground it is more difficult to execute. About seven chains of the head race below this piece has been opened up and partially finished. The contractor has delivered on the ground the- hand-made wire-netting the protective work at the intake, and he has collected about 100 yards of the large boulders for this work. He has also delivered some of the pipes for the culverts. The totara timber for the intake has not yet come to hand, but is expected soon. When I inspected the works on the 23rd Inst, there were seven men and nine horses at work. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer reported as follows: — Belvedere Road.—Metal on, the Tea Creek and Hururua roads has been raked in. Stone protective work on the Hoiki road has been repaired and water-tables cleaned where necessary. The st&ne work on Upper Belvedere road by the Hinaki bridge has been extended to prevent the creek from encroaching on the road. Approaches to the concrete bridge on Brooklyn road have been filled up. Parkvale Riding.—A start has been made with the metalling on a portion of Woodlands road. The drain on Hughes' road has been cleaned out. A broken culvert on Kokatau road 'has, been repaired. The creek on Perry's road has been cleaned, and Also the creek running through" the pit reserve on Somerset road. Maungaraki Riding.—Harvey is making fair headway with his metal contract on the Admiral road, having completed 60J chains up to the 23rd inst. General repairs are now' being carried out on the Rock Hill road. Water-tables have , been attended to on' portions of the Maungaraki Hill. General repairs are being carried out pn the Tarawata cutting on the Flat Point road. Metal on the Kaiwhata hill has been raked in and general repairs are being done on the remaining portion of "t^e-hill. The stone apron in the Pahoa ford has been extended to prevent cutting out on the low side. General.—Pot holes on the Main Road South have been attended to. Metal repairß have been' carried out on the Dalefield main road. Watertables on the Belvedere main road have been cleaned. Sheathing on the White Bridge has been repaired. The timber in this bridge is Bhowing signs of decay. I would suggest that'this bridge be limited to 5 tons in weight. A new joist has been put in the Wainuioru bridge. This bridge will also |- need renewing in, the near future. As instructed,, in company with Council- , lors, we inspected the river at Gladstone, and .recommend that willows be put down and anchored in a bight near the cliffs. In company with Crs. Hoddftr and Court we met members of the Greyjjbown Borough Council at the Matarawa bridge and decided to tar the decking and the sheathing planks. This work will be put in hand aa soon as, possible. 1 On the motion of Cr. Hodder, the members for the riding were to inspect the Wainuioru bridge an* report to next meeting.
