MOVING PICTURES

I DISCUSSED BY TEACHERS. I A committee meeting of the MasI terton Teachets' Institute was held in the Technical.School on Saturday, with Mr. G. J., Goldsman (vice-president) in the chair. The meeting was specially called to consider a letter. from Mr. P. A. Garry, Hastings, .conV vener of a committee set up by the last annual meeting of the* N.Z.E.I. to consider the question of moving pictures in relation to the moral, physical, and mental welfare of the school children of the Dominion. It was in consequence of a remit forwarded from the Masterton Tettchots' Institute to the N.Z.E.I. 's annual meeting that this committee was appointed. After a thorough discussion of the question, the following resolutions were passed:— ' . (1) x That a short programme of educational pictures could be attended once a week by all childfen without harm. * ■

(2) That, while recognising., that somo pictures are of education value, this committee is of the opinion that many pictures are screened which are entirely unsuitable for - children, depicting scenes positively injurious tp tho moral health, and giving a distorted or totally false conception of life. v -(8) That this committee favours the appointment of a board of censors, flomo of whom should be women. (4) That this committee favours tho Government having control of /pictures for children through tho Education Department. (5) That this committee is strongly of the opinion that, in view'of the high educational .value of many moving pictures, measures should be taken by tho Government (a) to secure a sufficient supply of suitable educational films; and (b) either to establish in each town a children's picture theatre, at .which the school .children of the neighbourhood would attend free during schoel hours, or to secure the use at certain times of the existing picture theatres for the same purpose.
