THE COMPETITIONS

MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY.

After an,enforced period of recess of over five years, necessitated; bfr the war, the once popular competitions are again to be held in May next. One of the most worthy 'and enterprising of the many schemes for; the advancement of Masterton, serving to advertise the town and district by inducing many persons as competitors to visit us, stimulating youthful and other talents by bringing them out before the public, and providing all with a week's great festival of muisc and literature, this venture should be* warmly encouraged and strongly supported by all. Competent judges in both musical and literary sections have been appointed, and many valuable medals, prize money and trophies are offered to the successful competitors in the various sections, of a- very comprehensive programme. A new departure has been made by the introduction of competitive Highland dancing, and the committee of management are sparing no pains to make the forthcoming festival the most and successful of the many well-remembered ones of pre-war times Singers and reciters, players and speakers, of all ages and degrees of experience—all are provided a means of expressing themselves publicly, and, perhaps most important of all, of obtaining an expert criticism of their efforts and capabilities The, secretary (Mr W. Gilleijpie, of Academy' Buildings, Maaterton) will be pleased to forward a programme, or syllabus of these competitions to any enquirer, and we note that the date of closing entries ia Friday, April letfc.
