PANSEBB AND VIOLAS. Pansieß and violas ore very popular, and can be seen in varying quantities in most gardens. Seed gives very good results, but the stock' of the best varieties Bhould be kept up by growing them from cuttings. The autumn i 3 the' time to insert them, and the young growths that spring up from the base mußt be.chosen; the old, hollow, flowering sterns are useless. If pulled away carefully many of these basal growths will have a few roots attached. The best soil for rooting them is a mixture containing plenty of sand and leaf mould. A shady position, or one where tho cuttings can bo' kept shaded, is necessary to root them in. Make the cuttings about three' inches long, and carefully trim off all leaves and stipules on the portion of the cuttings which is below the ground level. There is no need to insert tho cuttings too deeply, but they must be firm and tho base must be in contact with the soil. Many cuttings never root becauso there is a hollow space left at the bast of the' cutting. After insertion the cuttings must be kept moist, but not saturatod ,and every evening after a hot day give a spraying with clean water.
