SHORTAGE OF PAPER.

The shortage of news printing paper has become acute in New Zealand, and many of the city papers are reducing the size of their publications and increasing their charges for advertisements. When it is remembered that the cost of paper has jumped from £lO per ton in 1914 to £76 per ton in 1920, it will be seen that the expense of newspaper production has enormously increased. The only source of supply for tho future may be Scandinavia, and supplies from there are quoted at £94 per ton, with no certainty of delivery. The outlook for the Press of New Zealand is not encouraging. The public has been loyal to its provincial newspapere, and a continuation of this loyalty will assist the managements to overcome the acute difficulties that have to be encountered in the months to come.
