THE WAR MEMORIAL.
The citizens of Masterton have entered upon ,a very .ambitious scheme for the provision of a permanent memorial to those who fought in the great war. A sum of at least £30,000 will be required if the scheme is to be a success. The laying out of the grounds and the erection of a monument will involve an outlay of, probably, £IO,OOO, and at leasl £20,000 will be required to maintain the reserve in decent order. The district is quite capable of finding the money required. It has proved in the past that it appreciates the noble work performed by its gallant sons. The movement for a permanent memorial should not be confined to the town itself. It should appeal to every settler throughout the district. The enthusiasm that is being manifested by the committee should result in the development of proposals which will secure the money that is necessary to bring the scheme to a triumphant success.
