During the running of the Farewell Handicap afthe Opunake meet.ng the gelding Prince Formby fell, and breaking his leg, had to be destroyed.
John Bunny is making a good recovery from the mishap he met w;th At the Thames, and though he is not likely to start at the A.R.C. autumn meeting, his owner-trainer expects to have hira all right for the steeplechaso at the Royal meeting.
The clubs on the West Coast of the South Island recently wrote to the executive of the New Zealand Jockeys' Association, asking that a couple of lightweight horsemen be sent to ride at their fixtures, and offering to pay dxpenses one way. The executive aave arranged for D. O'Shea and A. linker to make the trip.
Beyond the bald statement that the judges appointed by the New Zealamd facing Conference, to hear the ap)eal of the Young Brothers, found that the Canterbury District bee had not sufficient evidence to ,ustify their canceling of lcen.ea of the riders concerned, nothing has jeen made public concerning the allegations made against the pair. This iole and corner sort of bus ness makes ,m absolutely tired, but what one i'ould really like to know is when the onvervative element connected with acing will be forced out into the open nd compelled to conduct their muires in the presence of Press reprclentatives? Surely, the present state f affairs has existed long enough, ,ates the Auckland Star's critic.
In framing their programme for the aeeting to be held in honour of the /sit of the Prince of Wales to Christhurch, the Canterbury Jockey Club lave included a race, which, is an oncerned, and one can hardly see eye ■> eye with the Soucnem executive ,n the matter. The race referred to 3 the Marlborough Stakes, of 1250 ova, for two-year-olds and upwards, raght for age without penalties, over t mile. At present the longest disance two-year-olds are asked to race •ver :"s seven furiongs, wh'ch is the distance of the C.J.C. ; Challenge itakesand North Island Challenge Stakes, and this is long enough even n the autumn. It is interesting to aote, however, that in both the events aamed, two-year-olds have won on the najority of occasions, but nevertheless, a race over erght, furlongs is a /ery severe test.
A discussion regarding the us© of the overhead checi rein on trotting horses took place at the last meeting if the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It was decided to write to trott : ng clubs suggesting that an endeavour should be made to get the rein slackened as •:oon as possible after races. This suggestion will be embodied in a circular requesfng trotting club to discourage the use of the ear-twitch.
The Canterbury Jockey Club has now the distinction of providing the most valuable hack event yet run in the Dominion, the Cornwall Handicap (hack conditions), to be run at the Royal Meeting, being worth 600 sovs, the distance being a mile and aquarter. 8 : s events have been arranged, which will distribute £4850, the events being:—Welcome Hurdle Handicap, of 500 sovs, 1J miles.
