Mr Rogers, solicitor, of Hastings, is at present in Masterton attending the Supreme Court sitting. Major-General Sir A. H. Russell,! who commanded the New Zealand Division in France, is visiting Wellington. Mr M. Myers, of Wellington, will arrive in Masterton by this morning's train to attend the sitting of the Supreme Court. The election to fill the vacancy on the Mauricev.lle County Council resulted as follows—R. C. F. Dagg 83 votes, V. A. Pinhey 15 rotes. Mr John McCorraack w'll leave San Francisco for Australia and New Zealand in June, and from th : s part of ' the world he will proceed to Britain by way of the Suez Canal. Sub-Inspector J. Cassells, who has been transferred from Whangarei to Gisborne, was farewelled at a public gathering in Whangarei and presented with several marks of esteem. Mr. H. R. Bias, manager of Messrs Gawith and Logan's offices at Martinborough, is at present- in Masterton attending the sitting of the Supreme Court. The friends of Mr L. M. Fairbrother, of Napier, and formerly of Carterton, will regret to learn of the death of his infant daughter. Mrs Fairbrother passed away three weeks 'ago.I Messrs M. J. Reardon and D. Myall, . secretaries to the Freezing Workers* [ Union, are engaged visiting the vari- "* ous freezing works in the Wellington [ district in connection with the annual election of officers. Mr Raymond Phillpotts, of the Bank of New South Waleß, Oamnrn, has been transferred to Wellington. Mr R. Phillpntts is the son of -Mr and Mrs Arthur Phillpotts, of Carterton. I Mr Eric Holmes, of Featherston, has been successful in winning the swimming cup for seniors at the Nelson College. This is the second year running that he has won this cup, which carries with it the championship for the College. The following promotions and appointments are announced in the Railway Department :—Mr E. J. Lizard to traffic auditor, Mr L. Barclay to traffic inspector, Mr H. Sayers, on behalf of the Guild, presented Mra , Ward with a handsome E.P. and Doulton china cake stand. The Rev. Mr I Peryman, of Port Chalmers, will suc:ceed Mr Ward in Carterton. I The Governor-General unve : led a Scouts' Roll of Honour at ,the VicItoria Institute at. Rotorua on Satiny Iday afternoon. The roll bears the names of 1 23 former boy scouts who served in the war, three of whom, Herbert Gordon, Cecil Goodson and Hori Ua, were killed. Un Saturday afternoon the Countess of Liverpool attended a soldiers' p.cnic organised by the Women's Patr.o!He Society. | The death took place at Castlepoint Station on Sunday afternoon of Thomas Martin Knight, an old man of seventy-two years of age, who had * been in the employ of the station for the past seventeen years. An inquest was held before Mr A. T. Hancock, J.P., of Tenui, on Monday last, and a vredict that the deceased died from heart failure was returned. The interj ment took place at Tenui on Monday afternoon. At a public meeting held at Carter- • ton last night it was decided that Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, ex-M.P./ be preI sented with a suitable testimonial in ! recognition of his past services to tha | Wairarapa electorate. The Mayor (Mr W. Howard Booth) informed Jha J meeting that although still seriously ill, there was hope that Mr Hornsby would pull through. It was decided I to request the other South Wairarapa towns ''to co-operate with Carterton, and a District Committee, consisting I of Messrs C. Fayers, W. D. Waterson, H. Hall, E. McKenzie, R. Cooper, C. Reid, E. Hall, D. Jensen, B. Roberts, W. Sunnex, J. McKenzie, -A. King, W. Hart, W. Renall, and G. Hart, was set up to canvass. Mr W. A. Kitchen was appointed secretary, and the Mayor' treasurer of the com* mittee.
