BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

Tho fortnightly meeting of tht Masterton Borough Council was helo last night at the Municipal Buildings The Mayor (Mr. W. H. Jackson) pre sided over a full attendance of tht Council. The New Zealand Educational Insti tute wrote in connection with the effect of moving pictures upon young children, and the best method of the control of the industry. —The letter was received.

A letter was received from the Wairarapa Hydro-Electric Investigation Committee in connection with tht election for the proposed board.—Tht Mayor moved that Crs. King and Perry be nominated for seats on the board. This was seconded by Cr. Watson and carried unanimously.

Tho park caretaker wrote in reply to the Council's complaint concerning the sale of tickets for the pleasure boats on the Masterton Park lake.— The letter was received, on the motion of Cr. King, who considered the explanation quite satisfactory. Several applications for rebates of the rental of the Municipal Hall were received by the Council. The Masterton Horticultural Society wrote forwarding its balance sheet and requesting that the Council assist it by making a reduction. Cr. Henderson moved that the application be granted. There was no question of personal benefit, and in tho past' the Society had dono excellent work. The Council decided to make a rebate of half the rent to the Society. In the matter of the deferred applications from the Masterton Eaihvay Social Club and a committeo of young people who organised a danco some weeks ago and showed a debit balance of £7 10s, the Council decided to only entertain tho application of the Railway Club for a rebate of half the rental.

The "VVairarapa Amateur Athletic Club wrote requesting a donation to its funds. On the motion of Cr. Bur. ridge, the request was declined. The report of the Municipal Solicitor regarding the right of the Council to rebate tho rates on the Methodist Orphanage property was laid upon the table for the perusal of Councillors. In the opinion of tho Solicitor, the Council had not the right to make the concession desired. This concluded the business of the Council.
