THE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—-Re memorial to our fallen soldiers, very many people in this district, who are very favourably.inclined to this object, are still under a cloud as to the name to be given to the grounds to be dedicated as a memorial to those who fell in the late war. In a report (published in your columns) to ! be submitted by a committee to the meeting to be held to-morrow n ght, a recommendation is made that the name shall be "The Masterton Soldiers' Memorial and Cameron Park." Many people whose relatives fell during the war, and others who are inclined to subscribe to the proposed memorial, have a strong objection to subscribe to any fund for a memorial to our fallen soldiers which ha 3 associated with it.the name of any private person, and if this is done the movement is very likely to result in a fa : lure, instead of a huge success, .as it should be. Commendable as ha a been the action of those who purchased a portion of showgrounds with a view to giving it as a memorial, I feel sure that they are not seeking any self-glorification by having their uamca included in the title to .the memorial or. the grounds, and no doubt on being properly approached they will willingly withdraw their name, sooner than run any risk of endangering tho proposed scheme. Th ! s is indicated by the statement in the report that "the gift was made absolutely unconditionally." Those who subscribe to such a purpose do not want their names handed down to posterity. Tho great aim should be to acquire something which will stand as a memorial for all time to the deeds and memories of those who sacrificed the : r liv£s during the war. —I am, etc., ZEPHYR. P.S.—I suggest that the grounds should be named "The Soldiers' Memorial Park." Tho inclusion of the * name "Masterton'' may be the cause of "pin pricks" td those actually living outside Masterton itself.
