Jensen, the trotting enthusiast of Waihukake, sustained & serious loss recently when a promis ing colt sustained a broken leg and had to be destroyed. Mr Jensen hac! retused several tempting offers for tht colt, which was fashionably bred. 'iho By-Laws Revisions Committet i of the \» airarapa Rugby Union is te meet at Carterton on Saturday even-; ing. .Good progress is being made yvith format-on ot a Pipe Band at Carterton. Nine players are now assured, while several young men are receiving tuition in order to bring the band up to its full strength. Mr T. S. Arcus and Pipe-Major Pearson are the forces behind the wheel. Owing to the shortage of ordinary milling timber pinus insignus is being cut .noo rafters and used for building purposes in this district. Six or seven new houses are in course of construction in various partt of the borough. There is quite a build.ng boom on just now—a sign of the town's progress. Small lot% of household coal are now obta nable at the municipal yards, the price being 3s 6d per cwt. The large plate glass windows oi the new premises of a Chinese merchant contain the following words in 1 prominent gold . lettering: "Confectioner, grocer, fruiterer, tobacconist." John i 3 a progressive institution, and may yet be aspiring to a J.Pship. The local Bowling Club intends run n'ng a pairs tourney during thi Easter holidays. The official bowl tester will be visit ing Carterton on Saturday and Wai rarapa bowlers who have not .already had their bowls tested should avaiJ themselves of this opportunity Bowb may be lefb with Messrs Murray and Morrison, opposite the green "up till Friday evening. The Silver Band will make its first public appearance since the arrival oj the new instruments at Carrmgtor Park on Sunday afternoon. The Band, under Bandmaster Woodley. has been practising three nighta a week, and improved playing may be expected. A public meeting is to be held ton;ght to decide upon the best means, of suitably recognising the services rendered to the district by Mr J. TM. Hornaby, ex-M.P. A presentation is to be made at the Dalefield school on Friday afternoon to Mr Nightingale (who is to take charge of the Greytown District High School), and to Mrs Nightingale. The Carterton Silver Band has a playing member who is 73 years of age. This is Mr W. G. Allen, who takes an exceptionally keen interest, in the organisation. - Mr Allen was' one of the promoters of the first bands at Wellington, Masterton, Carterton, and Greytown. Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., is making nn appeal through the lodges on behalf of the widow and family of the late Bro. C. D. Wiley. Totafa Lodge had 223 financial members for the quarters ending in February.
