On; Friday evening a fancy dress ball was held in aid of tho school funds. Visitors came from far and near, and the prize for the best lady's dress was presented to Miss McDon- - aid, of Eketahuna. The, floor was good, and the function proved a great success, both socially and financially. . On Wednesday next a team from tho local Rifle Club will travel to Mauriccvillo to fire the decisive match in tho triangular tussle—Alfredton-Mauriccville-Tararua. Welcome heavy rains have fallen, ljin. being registered at the school between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. on the night d¥ the 18th. - Feed is plentiful, and several farmers have harvested good, clean crops of oats. Some of the turnip crops which gave BUch promise a month ago are falling off,-owing to some trouble which resembles club-root. The local cheese company, at an extraordinary general meeting, unanimously carried a proposal to instal a pasteuriser. The Nircaha and Stirling Co-opera-tive Stores, Ltd., held their seventeenth annual ordinary general meeting on the 20th inst., when the following report was placed before the shareholders:—"The directors are pleased to be able to report a satisfactory year's business. Sales to the amount of £4439 5s lOd were transacted, showing an increase of £4BO 17s lOd over the previous report. Mr. A. Stewart was appointed a director in place of Mr. F. W. Turvey, who resigned on account of his leaving the district." , * KAITUNA. (Our Own Correspondent.) Threshing operations are now in full swing in this district, Mr. Eli Woodley's up-to-date plant having arrived a week ago; and. some splendid crops of oats have already been threshed. The best reported so far is Mr. R. Reid's, which threshed out well over 70 bushels per acre. On the same farm is to be seen one of the best crops of clover in the district. Mr. C. Hay, who as hort time ago purchased Mr. T. A. "Willis' property, has mado very rapid strides with stumping and ploughing, making .the place bear quite a different aspect. Taylforth Bros., who recently acquired Mr. J.* Wilson's farm and dairy herd, are also doing big improve* xnents. Quite a large portion has been ploughed for oats for spring feed. There has been an abundant rainfall
during the season in the district, and the factory suppliers are anticipating a fat season. It is reported that one supplier off a 300-acre farm has taken milk sufficient to make 100 tons of cheese, which, if correct, must break all previous records at the factory, and mane some of the less energetic sheepfarmers go in also for dairying. Being blessed with good road facilities, the settlers are gradually discarding the good old horse and replacing him with motor cars. The latest arrival is a new Oldsmobile, to the order of Mr. Wadham. *" The settlers over the Black Creek are badly in need of a bridge. The last flood washed their road completely away. Mrs. A. A. Burling, who last week met with a nasty accident, has recovered sufficiently to be about again. Mrs. and Miss Wilson, of Hawera, former residents'of Kaituna, have been visiting $e district, and wero the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. "Wilson.
