THE CATTLE TICK
AN . APPROACHING MENACE
At the meeting of the Farmers' Union at Carterton on Saturday last, Mr D. Hebenton displayed some interesting photos regarding the work of the cattle tick. The photos, ; which had been received by ■ the Gisborne branch, from tne U.S. Department of Agriculture, were .of a very interesting nature. One particularly striking example showed a steer infected with the tick, before he was dipped. That was in August, 1911, and the weight of the animal was 7301b5. An-other-photo showed, the steer after dipping in October of the same year. When freed-of <the -tick the animal weighed 10151bs. . Mr Hebenton stated thai the Gisborne farmers had become very concerned over the matter, as the menace, had now reached Te Kino. In Australia and America the tick had established itself, with most unfortunate results. The effect in the .United States would be easily seen by the photographs displayed that day.
