A NOTE OF WARNING.

Speaking at a commercial travellers' function in Wellington on Thursday, the Hon. Arthur Myers, M.P., issued a note of warning that should be placed on permanent record. "We are still continuing to enjoy a lafge measure of prosperity," he said, "due to our splendid credit and the prevailing high prices. But I would just like to suggest a note of warning, that these high prices are not, possibly, likely to continue for a number of years, and that we all seem inclined to be extravagant. ... We must not lose sight of the fact that .our production is not commensurate with the obligations we have' entered into as the result of the war, and you, as commercial men, should do all in your power to improve the idea to reduce that'inclination to extravagance. If you do so—l speak with some authority as having had control of the finances of this country for some time —then in this glorious country Ido not fear the future. The brightest gem in the British Crown, I believo it has a great future before it. I believe the time will come when we will become a self-contained Empire. I see that at Home a Commission is sitting endeavouring to restrict investment within the Empire; and that is one of the best things that can possibly occur. Immigration, also, will probably be confined to the Empire; and if these things are done, we shall see our Empire, which has always stood for freedom and justice, stronger than ever." (Applause.)
