CYCLING AND MOTORING NOTES.
For two motor cyclists to establish two world's records for tho All Day Road Record, within 24 hoairs of each other, is indeed a remarkable achievment. The rider to put up new figures was J. G. Ramsey, of Kadina, South Australia, who registered tho fine performance of covering 836 miles in the day on a Dunlop shod 3$ h.p. Lewis. Hardly had word of this great ride been flashed all over the world, than C. W. A. Korner, of Adelaide, set out to better Ramsay's figures, and he sticcoedcd in adding a further 35 miles to tho one-day old record, his mileage being 871$ miles. His mount was a .3$ h.p. Rudge. Ramsey selected a3B miles circuit for his ride, whilst Earner chose a 50£ miles course. Tho latter rider covered his first 200 miles in 5$ hours. Witli 4£ hours to go he had to travel. 166 miles to better tho record. One lap, 50$ miles, he negotiated in Ihr 2min, and from that he had, hairing accidents, the record in his grasp, and he eventually finished up the full day's run with 871 i miles to his credit. It was a grand achievement, and would have been better' only for Korner losing some 30 minutes with tyre/troubles. In that respect Ramsey was more fortunate, for he had not to touch his tyres throughout the ride. Ramsey's average was nearly 35 milesi per hour, whilst Korner's was nearly 36$ .miles per hour. Both riders were officially checked. Ramsey, Who was the first person to congratulate Korner on his fine ride, has announced that he will make an attempt to regain the record at an early date. Both these performances are considerably ahead of the Australasian Motor Car; All, Day Drive of 777 miles, standing to the credit of .Messrs H. B. Jones and H. L. Stevens since 1907.
It is said that nearly 100,000 motor' cars are runhjng in France, and a revenue of £3,600,000 is paid to the Government in direct and indirect taxes an these vehicles.,
A very satisfactory entry has, been received by the automobile clubs of Now South Wales arid Victoria in connection with the forthcoming motor car test from. Melbourne, to Sydney (627J miles). This run will last four days,'starting on January 7th, and all told the party will probably comprise nearly 150 persons. This will be the fourth motor car contest held between Sydney and Melbourne, two being held, by the Dunlop Rubber Company in 1905, and one last-March. The forthcoming test promises to be a most keen one, and will be decided on reliability, petrol consumption ■ and hill-climbing. Two motor cycle reliability contests will be decided at the end of this month—one from Sydney to Melbourne (75 entries), and one from Adelaide to Melbourne , (20 entries). Whilst thisre have been several motor cycle connpetitioris over the ney-Melbbume, route, this will be the first occasion upon which such a test has been held from Adelaide to 'Melbourne—a route that embraces the dreaded "Cobrong" desert between 'Meningie and Kingston. . The Syd-ney-Melbourne run will extend over four days, starting on December 29th, and the Adelaide-Melbourne 'test five days, starting on the same date. A mistake has been maje in claiming a world's,record for A. Goulett (Australia) and J. Fogler's; (America) 2751 miles covered in the recent six days' bicycle race decided at Madison, Square Gardens, New York. - These figures 'areonly aii American record, far the same team of riders recorded 27751 miles in a six day©' race held !. in Paris last April; j Ah American nder named Charles i! Mock has just seli up a motor; paced [ road record for>lOo miles. His time of 4h,irs 38n\in 40sec is* more than two minutes slower, than Don Kirkham?s I groat mipaced out and home' road ! record of 4hrs SGmin established last December. ■ ••. • f i. ' '•:•■'■ '
