DAMAGE TO MAORI.
SURVEY OF THE VESSEL
(By Telegraph — Frett Association.) CHHISTCHURCH ,Last. Night.
In order to make a thorough investigation, of the injuries to the bow of the. ferry stealer Maori, as a re: suit of .the" collision, with the, N.Z. Shipping Company's liner Ruahine at Wellington on Saturday..night, the' Lyttelton fterbour Board's diver (Mr MtfSean) was engaged" this morning (surveying the "vessel JbeTow.tEe- water line. Mr Bethune, Inspector of Machinery, was also present. The diver reported that everything below the water-line was intact* arid,,that, the bow rudder liad not sustained any material injury, and this was--subse-quently borne out by the rudder being given a trial. Above the waterline, *the bow shows distinct signs of the collision, more particularly the stem of the bow. The vessel is, however, watertight, and the Inspector of Machinery reported that she was perfectly seaworthy. As the extent of her injuries are chiefly confined above the water-line, and the bow ruddei is undamaged, it has practically been decided "to delay more extensive and permanent repairs until the Maori is ready for her annua} overhaul, probably in Jnhef next. The. Maori will leave, to-night as usual-on her journey to Wellington. Owing to no berth being available, the Ruahine anchored in the stream this morning, but at noon the Inspector of Machinery, Captain J. Blane (marine supt. of the N.Z. Shipping Company), and representatives of Messrs Anderson, Ltd., visited her. It is understood that about five plates amidships suffered some damage r"' ".'.•'.
