IN PORTSMOUTH DOCKYARD.
H.M.S. QUEEN MARY IN
DANGER
(Received December 22, 10 a.m.) LONDON, December 21. A huge semaphore tower surrounding a block of stores at Portsmouth Dockyard has been burned. The fire did damage estimated at several hundred thousand pounds. Oils and naval stores were destroyed in large quantities. The battleship Queen Mary was threatened but was towed to safety. •Tho 1 -rigging house, sail loft and the staff-captains' offices were burned. A large force of naval men prevented the fire spreading to the oil tanks. Many interesting documents of Lord Nelson's time and beyend were destroyed. TWO SIGNALMEN. PERISH. (Received December 22, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 21. Two of the signalmen of the semaphore tower perished.
