Mr F. McCallum, Town Clerk at Martinborough, 'has resumed duty, the operation under which he went at Wellington having proved successful. . •
Dr W. Anderson, who was for some years in practice in Blenheim, died recently at Thursday Island, where he held the appointment of medical superintendent. Information has been received from Dunedin of the death of Mrs Dallaston, wife of the ReV. C. Dallaston, for many years pastor of the Oxford terrace Baptist Church, Christchurch. Miss Dolly Allen, the youngest daughter of the Hon. . James Allen, Minister of Education, is leaving New Zealand next March for an indefinite period. It is Miss Allen's intention to study the Monteseori system of education under the celebrated teacher at Rome.
Mr Reginald Burridge has just received notice that 1, lie has beep successful in passing all examinations for qualification as a barrister and solicitor. The news, is gratifying, as Mr Burridge is a local boy, who matriculated at the JVlasterton District High School some fivfe years ago. He has since attended Victoria College, Wellington. , The Hon. G. Fowlds will leave Auckkind early next month on an extended holiday tour, during which he will be accompanied by Miss May Fowlds. He will journey to England by the Suez route, and will travel in tile United Kingdom and on the - Continent, returning through the United States of America. He will absent abotft eight months. The death . occurred at Wellington on Wednesday of Mrs Balfoiir, widow of' the late Mr T. W r . Balfour, of Napier, .in her fifty-eighth year. The deceased lady, wlio was. a &ister of Mrs H. H. :Beetham (of BrancepctM and Messrs W. E. and J. O. Bidwill, of Featlierstbn, was highly esteemed by all with whom she was acquainted. leaves a family of four sons arid two daughters. One, of the sons is Mr A. B. Balfour, of Greytown. The funeral took place at Featherston yesterday, and was largely attended. It is understood that the retiring Secretary for Labour (Mr J. Lomas) will be succeeded in that office by Mr F. W. Rowley, who is at present Chief Inspector of Factories, DeputyRegistrar of Industrial Unions, and Chief Clerk of , the Labour Department. Mr Lomas will officially terminate his connection with the Department on March 31st, 1914, at the end of the financial year, but in accordance with the usual custom will actually lay down* his duties on December 31-st, and will retire on three months' leave of absence with full pay. ,
