The mortal remains of the late Mr John Mackay, who died suddenly ou Monday morning, were laid to rest in the Clareville Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, the cortege to the graveside including some thirty district~residents, who were comrades, of deceased as special constables when the first contingent was despatched to Wellington irom the Wairarapa. The procession included motor cars, and it is a tribute to "the district that such patriotic feeling prevailed, as was evidenced by the large and representative gathering at short notice, who assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed one, who had taken his part of responsibility in going to Wellington at the commencement of the strike to help to restore law and order. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Eev. It. Thompson, a short service also being held prior to the commencement of .the funeral. The heavy southerly rain of Tuesday night is responsible for all the rivers and small creeks carrying an extraordinary volume of water. The Maungaterere is very high, and the Waiohine river is bank to bank, and all the low-lying country at the Waiohine bridge river is inundated, and the water is flowing across the road near the pah. At Dalefield the Kaipjffti'ngata is flooding the country, and the water in the vicinity of the Dalefield Hall and 'Goodins' is several feet deep. This water being backed up by the Maungatarere has also canned all the low-lying country near Messrs C. Fairbrother's, W. Abbott's and C. Fulhvood's homesteads to bo submerged.
