Millar would have put the disgruntled "Liberals" to confusion. Wo were not prepared to believe that it would have driven them to contemptible meanness and abuse. This is how, the Cliristchurch "Star," an offshoot of the. "Lyttelton Times," abuses, the Hon. J. A. Millar and every other member of the Ward Cabinet except the bright and particular rjtar:— ' <"

"It was an outstanding and lamentable fact that the defeat of the Progressive forces at the last election was largely owing to the deterioration of the Liberal Party largely brought about by the apathy and looseness of the personnel of the .Ministry. Several of the men upon whom the Liberals depended for light and * leading literally ..went, to pieces.. " They cast the onus -of the flight ' upon the shoulders of Sir Joseh Ward, who carried on the fight unassisted.
