AN UNPLEASANT INCIDENT.
t 9 An unpleasant incident in connection with the Lyttelton by-election was the fact that Mr J. A. McCullough, a member of the Arbitration Court, saw fit to write to a,. Christchtirch paper in support of the candidature of the Social-Democratic, candidate. The Christchurch "Press" took Mr McCullough to task in. the following /teiitas: — ... . • : "It is generally agveed that good taste and a sense of propriety ought to prevent anyone who holds a judicial or quasi-judiciaL-pfrsition from interfering - actively in party politics. That a member of the Arbitration Court, however, .should openly tout for the nominee of an organisation which has never ceased to contempt and ridicule on the Court, which has induced as many unions as it could to cancel their registration, which has persuaded some unionists to break their registered agreements, and which is now engaged in fomenting a general strike, accompanied b.v a defiance of the ordinary law of the land, appears to us simply appalling. It is striking evidence of the widespread injury caused by the undermining tactics of the Federa-. tion. By this amazing want of judgment and good taste Mr McCullough lias surely shown himself the last person in the world whom sober-minded, law-abiding electors of Lyttelton ought, to take as their guide' in deciding how they should vote."
