FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH.

CBQRISTOHURCH, Last Night, bnortly before throe o'clock on'Saturdny afternoon, columns of dense black smoke issuing from a portion, of .Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs' building in Cashel street indicated " the existence of an outbrenk of fire. Leads of liose were soon' playing on the fire, which had broken out in a workroo'.n at the -rear of the shop occupied by Madame Poppy, . milliner. When the Brigade arrived, tho. interior of the workroom was a mass of flames, but wit.li a plentiful supply of water, the Annies wore got under, and were prevented from spreading beyond the workroom. This portion of the building was completely gutted, and its contents were destroyed. The fire did not spread to any othed portion of the block. It is not known how the fire started. The, showroom and workroom staffs left the premises at I p.m. for their halfholiday, and all appeared safe. Madame ; .Poppy's stock,'which was valued at £2200, was insured for £looo' in the South British office, and for £3OO in the Royal office. The building belongs to Messrs Whitco-nlm and Tombs.
