IN CALIFORNIAN GAOL.
STRIPED UNIFORM ABANDONED

The authorities at San Quentin Gaol, California, /where there is an average population of two thousand convicts, have abandoned the striped prison uniform, substituting plain blue serge suits. The convicts assembled in the courtyard to watch the burning of the old suits, the prison band playing tunes until all were consunied. Six suits were reserved for incorrigibles sentenced to solitary confinement.
The prisoners are now divided into three classes —incorrigibles, those only behaving well compulsorily, and the honour class,' consisting of men .aware of their wrongdoing and-anxi-ous for reformation. <
