SUPPORTING THE STRIKERS.
'The that, has .influenced ■various Arbitraiion Unions in New Zealand „to>, contribute towards , the maintenance of those who are voluntarily but,of. wolpk, would be admired were it ttbt" so 'manifestly inconsistent. . Self preservation has been- described as the first law of nature, 'i'ho object <of the "Ued; Feds., *n goug on strike was prniarily , to destroy thd Arbitration Act,. and with it organised Unionism. Every Arbittationist. therefore, who contributes towards the Strike Fund is supporting the attack upon *he Arbitration Act, which alone provides for preference to Unionists. Apatt from this aspect of the question, those who contribute to the strike levy .ark relieving the State of eonsU jrable responsibility. If the "I .Wont Workers" were not receiving charity from the deluded workers, they would become a direct charge upon the charity '-of the State, .A© the. drivers 'arid waterside workers' positions are filled; the chances of the strikers returning to work become iaily more remote. Every man, therefore, w.ho encourages, his comrade to remain idle is lessening his opportunity of securing employment, and is doing himself a gross injustice. If the' Arbitration Unionists had a true regard for the welfare of those who nave voluntarily idled themsalves, they would, instead of encouraging their idleness, insist upon their' retaining to work.
