WELLINGTON, Last Night.
The Rev. D, C. Bates, of the Meteorological office, last evening wired as, follows: —■'
" High and squally westerly winds have prevailed. Bain has fallen, in most parts, of the country, and considerable enow.on the ranges in parts 'pf the South Island ; freshets are reported in the rivers on the West Coast, and the barometer has fallen very low in the south, 28.8 inches being reported yesterday at the Bluff. Present indications are for heavy rain in most parts of the country, with snow on the higher levels with the rivers rising. The barometer is unsteady, but will probably rise temporarily soon, with strong westerly winds change to increasing southerlies. ■
