POIRET FROCKS FOR FIVE SHILLINGS.
FAMOUS DRESSMAKER AND BUSINESS GIRLS. NEW YORK, Oct. 6. M. Poiret is the most versatile of costumiers. Not only does he make beautiful dresses for duchesses and Ui;> wives of Cabinet Ministers, but he is equally ready to design a sim-
plo and inexpensive dress that comes well within the means of the business girl. "Have you ever designed a Ponet costume for the business girl—a costume that does not cost a fortune ?" M. Poiret was> asked here. "I can de-sign costumes for anybody," M. Poiret replied. "Frequently I have designed cheap frocks for girls in milliners' shops in Paris. One that I designed in rough linen cost about five shillings, and it looked as well as the most expensive creation. That was because it looked what it was —a simple frock, and not a bad imitation of an elaborate gown." M. Poiret's opinion is that the girl with a small income makes a mistake because she will not be satisfied with simplicity; she apea expensive fashions, and the result, as the great costumier said, with an expressive shrug of the shoulders, is "impossible." - Here are M. Poirets suggestions for a frock and hat for the business girl, and the two should cost no more than twelve shillings*:— Serge or rough linen is the material of M. Poiret's choice, and he emphasises the advantages of a coat and skirt over a one-f>iece frock. "It ia more serviceable," he said. "It can be worn in cool weather and on hot days. It permits of more variety, as coloured blousjes can be worn. "The skirt should be long and narrow—perhaps slit a little, but only if the wearer has to walk a good deal. As for the' hat to go with this costume, it should be just .something little and round and quiet, made out of velvet or oilskin."
