POLITICS AND POLITENESS. - «» A lecture on the subject of politeness was delivered by the Bishop of Tasmania (Dr Mercer.'p in Sydney last week. In the course of his remarks Dr Mercer pictured the politician in rather a new light, when he said "Politics and politeness are akin." The statemont was greeted with a very loud' laugh. "I was all at sea on this point, too," added the Bishop, "but now I see that the politeness all belongs to the politician before election. After he is elected it does not matter. (Loud laughter.) That is as clear as daylight. Before election the manners of politicians are eimply beautiful. (Laughter.) Manners are negative and positive, the things you must not do and the things you should do. Politeness implies no undue exhibition of feeling. The gladiators when butchered to make a Roman holiday were taught not to make outcry. Fortitude was a virtue. The polite man bottled up his feelings when someone stood: on his corns, but the impolite man let out his feelings, and said things."
