Captain Section is at present acting as a "special" in Auckland. Mr G. H. Sykes, M.P., came to Masterton on Saturday for the weekend. The new stationmaster at Hukanui (Mr Jackson) took up his duties on Thursday last. A London cable states that Lord Alverstone, late Chief Justice of England, is to receive a pension of £4OOO per year. Mr E. L. Holmwood, with Mrs Holm wood, who have been on a visit to the Old Country, returned to Masterton an Saturday night. An old identity of Maeter'ton in the person of Mr Wong You has been admitted to the Mastcrton Hospital, suffering from a stroke of paralysis. It is considered probable that Mr J. D. C. Crewe, son of the late Mayor, will be elected Mayor of Pahiatua for the remainder of the present term.
Mr William Perry, of ■ "Penrose," Masterton, will reach Sydney on Thursday next. Ho should, therefore, reach Wellington 011 Wednesday of next week. Mr Colin Campbell, of C-lareville, was Oh Saturday last added to the list of district representatives of the Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association. Messrs E. Eagle, junr., and C. Morgan, of Belvedere, left Carterton on Saturday morning for Wellington. They will act as judges at' the Nelson show this week'. Messrs Paul Hunter (Porangahau), and P. A. McHard.v (Palmerston North) were on Saturday last elected life members of the Masterton A. a.nd P. Association. Mr H. S. Moss, secretary of the Wa.irarapa P. and A. Society, sustained a sprain to. his ankle on Friday evening, and was unable to attend his office on Saturday morning. Mr J. Georgeson, late of Masterton. presided' at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society 011 Saturday. Mr Georgeson ie on his way to Gisborne, for which place lie leaves to-day.
Mr W. R. Kemball will leave Mas-, terton this morning for Auckland and Waihi. It is Mr Kemball's intention to make a report in connection 7 with a big mining "proposition on the Waihi goldfiekte, in which a number of Masterton residents are interested, The death Occurred at Haleombe last week of Mr William Cowdrav, at the age of 75 years, Mr Cowdray had been for 36 years in the Halcombe district. His wife predeceased him by nine years. A grown-up family of three sons and three daughters survive. Prior to his departure for Wellington Mr Scheming, the late, stationmaster at Hukanui. was entertained by his numerous friends at a smoke concert. Mr J. Wilson presided, and during the evening presented Mr Scheming with a, handsome silvermounted shaving outfit. Several speeches were made and various toasts honoured. Mr Scheming feelingly returned thanks.
