APPEAL TO UNIONISTS.
The Strike Committee in Wellington is making a desperate appeal to Unionists to come to its assistance. It alleges that there is an imminent danger of the Arbitration Act being so amended as to bring all forms of labour under the heel of monopolies. This contention is, on the face of it, grotesquely absurd.. The Government has no intention whatever of destroying the privileges of those who are prepared to work honestly under the conditions of the Arbitration Act. All it desires to do is to stamp out the agitator and the adventurer, and make the calling of the wrecker of industry impossible. , But, supposing that the Government were determined to make labour unionism absolutely ineffective, how, in the name of cofiimon-sensej can. the continuation of the strike prevent that determination being given effect to?- Are these strikers* mad ; that they make such ridiculous appeals t<? their fellows? Are they not ftWdre that the ballot-box i<s the only place at which redress can be obtained for legislative wrongs? Are they going to starve their wives and families, and endeavour to induce others/ to starve, on the remote chance that by so doing they will prevent legislation asked for by the country from being passed ? Ae well might they starve themselves to prevent the sun, or the moon from shining.
