Devil's Elbow Deviation.—l liave been unable to get satisfactory offers for the tunnelling at the Devil's Elbow. The nature of the papa being of a loose character contractors deem it essential to timber. This Ibeing so the cost of tunnelling would exceed that of bridging. I Consulted €r. Toogood on the matter and it was deemed advisable to altar the proposal of tunnelling and filling to that of bridging. Acting on directions I have communicated with the Roads Department to that effect, and have asked for an early reply. Approximate cost of bridging 33ft x 18ffi roadway £360. Earthwork, metalling and culvert £9B. Total £458. Taueru Bridge.—Most urgent repairs on above bridge will be completed next week.
