IN HAWKE'S BAY.
SHEARERS NOT AFFECTED
SYMPATHY FROM CARPENTERS
HASTINGS, Last Night. An far as can be ascertained, there seems to be no disposition on the part of the shearers in this district to join the strike. Shearing opera-
tions are in full swing in various parts of the province, and other sheds commence to-morrow. A meeting of the Hastings branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners passed the following resolution : "Wo extend our heartfelt sympathy to the loeked-out waterside workers in Wellington, and whilst regretting the strike, we admire the magnificent solidarity shown by the workers in Auckland and elsewhere by refusing to assist to defeat the workers in Wellington. As this appears to be a deliberate attack on organised labour, the members here assembled pledge themselves to pay a levy of 5 f>er cent of their wages to assist the workers in the fight. We wisli- to express our contempt for the alleged free labour, and our utmost contempt for the so-called volunteers who are the alleged defenders of the alleged free labourer."
