WARSTEP TAKES THE STEWARDS.

After heavy rain, the weather was rather doubtful, but improved towards midday, and the New Zealand Cup meeting opened under conditions that were by no means unfavourable. Evidently there had not been so much rain at Riccarton as in the city, and the track was in first-class order. The attendance, though not comprising such a large contingent of North Islanders, was still very good. The totalisator investments for the day were £42,447J as against £42,634, a decrease of £l5O. A.s a large section of the North Island sporting community were not down, the figures are remarkable. Following are details of the racing:—
Spring Hurdles Handicap, of 300 sovs., two miles.—l Hon. J. D. Ormond's Peary, 10.8 (A. Julian), 1; 2 Coronetted, 10.12, 2; 3 Kilmeny, 9.9, 3. Also started—Umberaboy 9.0. Won easily by three lengths from Coronetted, who defeated Kilmeny by two lengths. Time, 3mi.n 36 l-ssec.
Spring Plate, of 500 sovs., special weights, one mile—3 Sir G. Clifford's Stevedore, 7.7 (B. Deelev), I; 1 Birkful, 7.7 (W. Bell), 2; 2 Bankfiia,.6.ll (C. Kennedy \ 3. Also started—s Sir Malt, 4 Sunbird. Birkful momentarily showed in front, but Stevedore, finishing well, heat him by three-quarters of a length. Banksia five lengths away third, with Sunbird a length and a-half further back. Time, lmin 41sec. Riccarton Welter Handicap, of 400 soys., one mile.—l, Sir G. Clifford's Brown Owl, 9.5 (B. Deeley), 1; 5 Lord Renown, 9.7 (S. Reid) ,2; 6 Princess Moutoa, 8.2 (C. Price), 3. Also started—B Odessa, 4 Ogier, 3 Cherubini, 9 The Comet, 7 Specialform, .1 Silver Shield, 11 Mumura, 2 French Rose. Half way down the running Brown Owl cam© with a welltimed run and won by a, length from Lord Renown, who finished fast. Princess Moutoa was three-quarters of a length away third. Turning towards the straight, Sea Pink, on the rails, took charge, but a little further on was challenged by Sinapis, who drew away and won easily by throe lengths and a-half. Sea Pink was a length in front df his stable companion, Midnight Sun, who was followed at an interval of a Length and a-half by Ariom. Then came Thrax, Royal Arms, and Mangaroa. Time, 3min 26 4-ssec. / Welcome Stakes, of 1000 sovs., for two-year-olds./ colts 8.5, fillies 8.0, four furlongs.—2 E. J. Watts' ch g Downham,' B.o' (h'.' .Wilson), 1; 5 Hon J. D.
