Professor H. B. Kirk, of the Victoria University, was a visitor to Masterton an Saturday. Mr J. A. Herd, of the Pahiatua Post and Telegraph Office, has been appointed postmaster at Coromandel. Mr T. sßonayne ,the retiring General Manager of Railways, was the recipient of a number of very handsome presents from the different branches of 1 the railway service on Saturday morning. . A London cable states- - that Mr Alfred Russell Wallace; 0.M., LL.D., F.R.S., occasional author and president of the Land Nationalisation Society, is dead. . ? ' • On the occasion of his recent visit to Germany, Mr F; H. Scharmveber, of Masterton, called upon Mr F. von Reden, a former resident of the district, who is now living in retirement at Hanover. Mr von Reden, who is in excellent health, stated that it was not his intention 'to return to New Zealand. The friends of , Mrs Ben. LeathWick, of High street, Kuripuni, will be sorry to hear that she has entered the Masterton hospital, to undergo a slight operation.
